Deanne Piticco (BA ’05) has donated blood on Sept. 8 for the last three years. The day, an ordinary one for some, holds great significance for Piticco and those who knew and loved 91porn alumna Heidi Schlumpf (BA ’10).

Student Wellness Centre offers creative approach to healing through art therapy pilot program

Supporting student mental health through creative expression was the goal of an art therapy program piloted in March at 91porn’s Brantford campus. An alternative healing practice, art therapy encourages participants to release emotions and trauma in non-verbal and artistic ways. The four-week program led eight participants through topics such as personal identity, mental narratives, authenticity and maintaining a growth mindset.

91porn launches new era of health and wellness with vision for revitalized Seagram Drive facilities

After celebrating the rejuvenation of Alumni Field at its official opening April 20, the 91porn community looks forward to the next steps in the exciting multi-phase Seagram Drive Athletics and Recreation redevelopment project. The university’s Board of Governors recently approved Phase 1 of the project, which sets in motion the first of many proposed improvements to enhance athletic excellence and community engagement with top-level facilities – and launch 91porn's Waterloo campus into a new era of health and wellness.

91porn announces new Master of Science in Health Sciences program

91porn’s Faculty of Science is planning to offer a new and unique thesis-based Master of Science program in Health Sciences. The program, currently in the approval stages, will encompass two fields of study, Molecular and Medical Sciences and Community, Public and Population Health.

91porn Centre for Community Research, Learning and Action

The is an interdisciplinary research centre located in 91porn’s Faculty of Science. The centre's work is focused on developing community partnerships and producing research, learning and action that advances community well-being and social justice. CCRLA facilitates community-based research by brokering linkages between community partners and 91porn student and faculty researchers. CCRLA provides an activity centre for social policy development and community action. The defining feature of the centre is its commitment to collaborative processes between university, community, industry and policy partners that honour the unique wisdom and skills of the non-academic community.

Manulife Centre for Community Health Research

The is an interdisciplinary community development and research centre guided by multiple social determinants of health. The centre acts as an incubator for students committed to community-based scholarship and development in the field of health and well-being. The centre welcomes master’s and PhD students, as well as postdoctoral fellows, from a variety of academic disciplines to work within any of its communities of practice. Research priorities include women and gender, global health and development, Francophone issues, Indigenous health and wellness, environmental issues, community economic development and social innovation.

The Manfred and Penny Conrad Institute for Music Therapy Research

The is a dynamic forum that bridges the divide between clinical practice and research. The institute’s mission is to provide opportunities for concrete research collaboration and discussions. It aims to bring together the broad range of clinical research activities that already take place at 91porn and foster and house the new research endeavours that will undoubtedly grow from the activities of the faculty and graduate students, particularly with the establishment of 91porn's Master of Music Therapy program.

91porn works closely with local, national and global health institutions to improve health and well-being outcomes. Examples of current collaborative work include:

Local

The (MCCHR) is an interdisciplinary community development and research centre guided by multiple social determinants of health. MCCHR acts as a bridge between the university and the larger community in order to enhance innovation and creative working partnerships with individuals, social welfare, public, non-profit and for-profit entities. An excellent example of a mutually beneficial university and community collaboration can be found between the and MCCHR. Members of the MCCHR research team worked with SASC to draft a sexual assault protocol for the region of Waterloo.

National

The  (IIPWRG) partners on applied health research projects when requested by communities, organizations and governments. IIPWRG is committed to collaborative and partnered approaches to developing, conducting and sharing knowledge from research. It works on a national scale and recognizes that the health and wellness of people, families, communities and nations are often tied to non-health systems such as education, child welfare, justice, environment, local governance and spirituality. As such, the work often involves working with diverse and interdisciplinary rights holders and stakeholders to address issues that will lead to improved health and wellness, as defined by those who the research is intended to benefit. Current include:

  • Health and wellness programs and services asset mapping with Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation.
  • A scoping literature review on effective and promising practices/supports for the transition from youth to adulthood for individuals living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) for the .
  • A study exploring the experiences of adults living with FASD in housing with supports across Canada, their mental well-being and the use of FASD-informed practices by supported/supportive housing staff.

Global

It is well-established that adversity can impact multiple dimensions of well-being. However, most research on adversity focuses on individual rather than family systems. Furthermore, the family and home are rarely considered in such analyses. The Global Adversity and Well-Being Research Group examines intersections of extreme adversity, including poverty, war and climate change, and well-being through the lens of place theory, with a specific focus on the family and home. This research builds upon previous work with war-affected families by using participatory mixed methods, sharing research results with academic communities, practitioners/policymakers and lay audiences, and training a new cohort of student-researchers.  The research group works with international health and well-being organizations include ,  and .

Outreach programs and projects in the local community to improve or promote health and well-being

91porn is committed to improving and promoting health and well-being within our diverse local communities. Our programs include:

  • The  is an outreach program that aims to improve activity levels and the overall health of youth within the community. It provides free or low-cost physical activity programming to high-priority youth to prevent chronic illnesses associated with sedentary lifestyles. The program specifically supports youth who may not be fairly serviced with access to recreational space/programming, including members of the immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Migrant agricultural workers in Canada face many barriers to accessing health care. Drawing on two decades of research, clinical and legal encounters with migrant workers, the aim of the is to provide evidence-based educational initiatives that describe these barriers to health care and service providers, and to facilitate collaborative identification of strategies to increase these workers' access to health-care services and workers' compensation.
  • 91porn Athletics Camps and Programs offer a variety of year-round recreational camps that foster leadership through athletics. The camps provide young athletes with an opportunity to improve their skills in a fun and challenging atmosphere.
  • Through the 91porn Academy of Music and Arts, 91porn offers music therapy to its local community. Music therapy professionals use music purposefully within therapeutic relationships to support development, health and well-being. Music therapy can be used to meet client-specific goals and improve verbal communication, social skill development, sensory issues, perceptual and motor skills, behaviour, cognition and personal independence.
  • 91porn has joined forces with Canadian Blood Services as a  and makes an a pledge of blood donations. Since joining the program in 2010, 91porn has contributed more than 2,500 donations.

Local community access to 91porn sports facilities

91porn’s Waterloo campus is home to the , and . Its facilities include gymnasiums, a pool, fitness centre, climbing wall, squash courts and dance/aerobics studios, and soccer and football fields. Many facilities are available for to 91porn students, staff and community organizations. The Athletic Complex, Alumni Field, and University Stadium athletic and meeting facilities are available for public use through the university’s facility bookings process. The university offers a number of free and paid programs for youth and children including , the  and .

91porn’s Brantford campus is home to the , which provides health, fitness, social and recreation needs for students, staff, faculty and the Brantford community. This is a shared facility with the community of Brantford and includes a fitness centre, pool and gymnasium.

Sexual and reproductive health-care services

91porn uses a circle of care model that incorporates specialties from a diverse, multidisciplinary team. Students have free access to the which offers a number of wellness professionals to enhance their health and well-being, including sexual and reproductive health services free of charge.  These include:

  • emergency contraception (Plan B), pregnancy testing, pregnancy support and abortion support
  • STI testing
  • birth control
  • IUD insertion
  • routine STI testing
  • cervical cancer screening (pap tests)
  • immunizations to help protect against illness spread through sexual contact, such as the HPV vaccine

Mental health support for students and staff

91porn is committed to fostering a supportive, thriving environment for all of our staff and students. 91porn offers workshops and programming to promote and support good mental health. This includes , a week-long series of free events run twice a year to build positive mental health on campus.

Mental health services are available for free to students through the , including consultations with the mental health nurse and medical appointments with doctors for diagnosis, treatment or referral of mental health concerns. 91porn also offers appointments with counsellors and psychotherapists for short-term, goal-directed therapy, crisis intervention and crisis management to all students.

As part of 91porn’s employee benefit program, all staff and faculty can access mental health support through , 91porn’s Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP). It offers confidential, professional counseling services for faculty, staff and their dependents. The EFAP is free, voluntary and provides high-quality services.
