At this year’s International Women’s Day Breakfast, we spotlight a groundbreaking initiative addressing one of Australia’s most pressing social challenges—housing insecurity for older women.
The St Vincent de Paul Society Tasmania (Vinnies), in partnership with the St Vincent de Paul Society Housing Australia, is set to transform one of its existing Hobart sites into a secure and dignified refuge for women over 55 at risk of homelessness. Designed by Maguire + Devine Architects, this $16.7 million project will deliver 38 thoughtfully designed studio apartments in its inner city location, providing not just housing, but a community of safety and support.
At the heart of this development is trauma-informed design, ensuring that the project’s core values—dignity, safety, well-being, and community—are embedded into every aspect. Residents, drawn from the social housing waiting list, will find more than just shelter; they will gain a secure foundation for rebuilding their lives. The architecture fosters connection through a vertical garden and rooftop green spaces, while each self-contained studio offers privacy with a personal kitchen, bathroom, and balcony.
Supported by Homes Tasmania under the federal Social Housing Accelerator program, this initiative is a beacon of hope, responding to the growing crisis of older women facing housing instability due to domestic breakdowns and financial hardship.
Join us as we explore how this visionary project is reshaping the future of social housing in Hobart.
About International Women's Day
International Women’s Day celebrates the economic, political, and social achievements of women past, present and future while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender equality. Through this Women’s Planning Network (WPN) annual event, we recognise the contribution of women in planning, a profession in which women have a long history of participation and leadership in roles which make a significant contribution to the wellbeing and liveability of the communities we create.
