Ethics in Planning
About
Understanding ethics is an integral part of being a planner in today's world. James Hitditch explores the myriad of ethical and integrity issues in planning practice, the thought processes and impacts of ethics and bias.
Planners face diverse vested interests in their work which can easily result in conflicts of interest, inappropriate lobbying, internal politics, and even explicit threats by stakeholders in order to promote their interests through the planning scheme. Practitioners will learn to strengthen the skills they need to endure such pressures, proactively identify and prevent them from occurring, and to apply these skills to situations they have or will experience in the future. Professional ethics can assist in ensuring best practice is promoted in planners' work, and participants will understand the role of power in protecting and promoting their interests and a variety of other professional skill sets necessary to not only be an excellent planner, but an excellent professional.
