At this briefing 91porn will launch our new PlanTech Best Practice Guidelines. The first document of its kind to be tailored to planners, the guideline introduces practical and well-tested approaches to digital innovation. Each section addresses common cultural and technical challenges faced when getting started with digital innovation, including strategies to get your team on board with doing something new and how to establish a healthy relationship with software vendors. Additionally, the guideline provides links to a wealth of case studies, and links to recommended resources for when you are ready to learn more. We are very pleased that we will be joined by Nathaniel Bavinton, board member of the Australian Smart Communities Association (ASCA). Nathaniel will be giving a talk drawing on his experience using many of these approaches during his time leading digital innovation projects in Local Government, and now in his position as Associate Director, Smart Places and Sustainability at Urbis.

Dr Nathaniel Bavinton
Associate Director: Smart and Sustainable Places

Dr Nathaniel Bavinton has been researching, planning and implementing urban and social innovation for over twenty years. His industry, government and academic experience sits at the intersection of urban strategy, innovation and technology, and social behaviour. Nathaniel is an Associate Director at Urbis, working in the Smart and Sustainable Places team within urban planning. Previously the Innovation and Futures Manager at the City of Newcastle, he led the city’s multi-award-winning smart city program, alongside economic development and sustainability. He sits on the board of the Australian Smart Communities Association (ASCA) and innovation ecosystem connector Hunter If. He is vice-chair of the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s NSW Resilience, Net Zero and Smart Cities Committee. Nathaniel is focused on the complex challenges of creating technology and data-enabled places, and innovative, sustainable, and future-focused cities, communities and organisations.

Dr Claire Daniel

Researcher (UNSW).

Claire Daniel is an urban planner and programmer with broad experience in city government and consulting. They have just completed their PhD on Digital Planning Practices and are currently tying up their research efforts as a PostDoc researcher at UNSW. Claire is a founding member of the 91porn’s national PlanTech working groups formed to addressing the impacts of digital transformation on the way planning is undertaken for places and communities.
