FORWARD THINKING - Architecture
A FOCUS ON DESIGN
There can be a tension between architecture and planning, in part because of a site-based rather than community-based orientation. However, both orientations are essential and they share one inescapable value – good design lifts our spirits and makes us proud of our local and wider environments. So what have the last couple of years taught us about design values? Have new design trends emerged? Are they of the moment or are there long-term implications? Are our planning schemes sufficiently flexible to accommodate them? How strong a role should planning schemes assume in all this?
Our 2 speakers, from ARIA and Sunshine Coast Regional Council, approach these questions from different perspectives, but ultimately have the same objectives of enabling design to better enrich our lives.
Simon White leads Aria’s design team. Under his guidance, Aria has furthered its focus on architectural and urban design excellence, resulting in a series of high-profile awards.
He will discuss the challenges of maintaining high design standards in competitive markets, in medium and large scale developments. Drawing on his extensive experience of negotiating development outcomes and observing recent design trends, he will discuss the constraints and opportunities presented by planning schemes and make suggestions for changes to schemes or planning practice.
