THE VALUE OF PLANNING AND POLITICS IN … shaping good community outcomes

Planning is for communities and no one is more accountable to them than an elected official (a Member of Parliament or Councillor). They are a vital part of the planning process.

But there are competing interests – not just community, but business. Not just development, but also sustainability. Not just innovation, but consistency. Also the dilemma of representing one’s local constituency interest versus broader Council, Region or State interests.

This seminar will explored the interaction between planning and politics and how one can and should shape the other to benefit communities. Each speaker has diverse expertise - they are planners & their experiences cover pivotal roles in the planning process; Paul as a Minister and MP; Greg as a local government CEO and Administrator. They will draw on their extensive experience of the contributions made by planners and politicians that together have produced excellent community outcomes. From that, they suggest ways to better combine the disciplines to improve communities.

About the speakers:

The Honourable Paul Lucas M91porn is a non-executive director and consultant with Holding Redlich. Paul is both a solicitor and an urban planner by profession. He was Deputy Premier for 4 years and a Minister in the Queensland State Government for 11 years. His Ministerial responsibilities included Infrastructure and Planning; Transport and Main Roads; Local Government; Energy; Health; and Attorney-General. He was involved in many large transport infrastructure projects in South-East Queensland. He was also the Minister responsible for the South-East Qld Regional Plan. He was responsible for managing the State’s relationship with the Federal Government and Local Government on many projects.

Greg Chemello, Chief Executive Officer, Moreton Bay Regional Council, has 35 years’ experience in property development, project delivery, economic development, stakeholder /community engagement and governance. Over the last 20 years, his leadership has focused on organisations experiencing substantial transformation, including Ipswich City Council as Interim Administrator following the dissolution of Council.
