THE VALUE OF PLANNING IN … achieving social equity
Planning is motivated by a desire to create better communities. Planning for social equity means being cognisant that planning practices can have a disparate impact on certain communities and there is a need to actively work with affected residents to create better communities for everyone.
Communities may experience inequity due to a range of reasons, including mobility, health and income. Ensuring policies and practices avoid limiting opportunities for groups within the community is essential.
It is essential that planning works to avoid suboptimal outcomes such as impacts on health, social isolation, time pressure, reduced consumption and investment.
Rebecca Oelkers, Chief Executive Officer, Brisbane Housing Company discusses the importance of planning in creating inclusive and diverse communities and how affordable housing contributes to successful and thriving cities and regions, including the challenges and opportunities involved in bringing affordable and mixed tenure housing to life.
Myles Campbell , National Product Manager, Mirvac, discusses the economic, social and environmental outcomes from the state of the housing landscape, an assessment of the current solutions for the system and what are the gaps that planning could address.
