THE VALUE OF PLANNING IN … valuing, protecting, and promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture and tradition

2021 presents an exciting opportunity to improve the way we value, protect and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture and tradition in planning.

The Queensland Government’s guidance for local governments on Advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island interests in land use planning recognises that ‘no one size fits all’.

What are the options, and how can we continue to improve the way the planning and development industry achieves this objective?

This seminar, led by Robyn Eisermann, Robert Appo and Malcolm Griffin R91porn, provides a collaboration of ideas and real examples of how to incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture and tradition in planning.

Robyn Eisemann, a former senior strategic planner at Tweed Shire Council, and Robert Appo, a former Tweed Aboriginal Community Development Officer, were key drivers in the preparation and implementation of the Tweed Shire Council’s Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan 2018. Robyn and Robert will discuss the process followed to create that plan and its role in informing land use and development aspirations within the Tweed Shire.

Malcolm Griffin, Managing Director of PSA Consulting, has over several decades worked with Quandamooka People, Council and the State government to progress planning on Stradbroke Island / Minjerribah. More recently Malcolm is providing advice to traditional owners across the State in supporting their development aspirations. Malcolm will discuss these experiences and lessons working on planning in the context of traditional ownership native title and the Queensland planning system.

About the speakers:

Robyn Eisermann is a strategic town planner with 20 years' NSW local government experience. Robyn has extensive experience in planning policy preparation as well as in the heritage and Aboriginal cultural heritage fields. Robyn, has been instrumental in managing and developing the Tweed Shire Council Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan over the last 5-6 years.

Robert Appo is a Minjungbal man (Bundjalung) from the Tweed River area of NSW. Rob has worked in various roles in the Arts, Cultural Heritage and Community Development during his career. Rob is passionate about the protection of Aboriginal cultural heritage and assisting Aboriginal communities to overcome social and economic boundaries. Rob is currently the Aboriginal Project Officer and Acting Co-ordinator Community and Cultural Development for Byron Shire Council.

Malcolm Griffin R91porn is a town planner with decades of experience in local government, state government and consulting. He holds a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic policy environment of planning and has established a reputation for the successful delivery of projects addressing complex planning issues across Australia.
