New Bridgewater Bridge Project - Major Project Approval
New Bridgewater Bridge Project Team at the Department of State Growth
The replacement of significant infrastructure servicing the major highway linking north and south of Tasmania at Bridgewater Bridge required significant strategic thinking. The project is the largest ever investment in a single transport infrastructure project in Tasmania’s history and has the potential to provide significant benefit to commuters, and the communities which it links. The project spans three municipalities, multiple tenures, and significant cultural and natural values. In 2020 it was determined that the application would seek planning approval through the yet to be established Major Projects pathway, which provided an opportunity to allow for the consideration of innovation and strategic thinking in the assessment process. The pathway provided for the creation of what was effectively a new planning scheme under which the project was to be assessed, providing for flexibility in the design process to meet the assessment process. The use of the Major Projects pathway allowed for a great breadth of co-ordinated regulator input, and this resulted in conditions that provide flexibility for a community-based development approach into the future.
