Michael Coots

The judges unanimously agreed that Michael Coots is a true ‘champion’ of planning, and a worthy recipient of this award.

Michael has spearheaded the BEIIS (or ‘Built Environment Integrated Information System’), which is enabling and empowering remote indigenous communities. Unlike conventional geographic information systems, the BEIIS does not require special consultants, software, or skills to access and use. As a result, the BEIIS brings otherwise out-of-reach information within reach, builds capacity within communities, and allows local decision-makers to make informed decisions that support their unique goals and aspirations.

While easy access to data may be taken for granted in metropolitan regions, the challenge Michael has conquered in assembling, transforming, presenting, and maintaining spatial data in remote indigenous communities cannot be understated.

Michael is not just a champion for planning, but also for the communities he serves. Michael’s work extends beyond planning, and his visionary leadership has delivered significant, tangible benefits to remote indigenous communities. His work is also highly transferrable and has the potential to similarly empower other coastal and remote communities throughout Australia.

Queensland, and the communities Michael works in, are lucky to have him.

Congratulations, Michael Coots!
