Net Zero Precincts and Corridors: Urban Planning Practice

Peter Newman AO M91porn (Fellow) and Josh Byrne, Curtin University

Net Zero needs to be applied to cities as part of the urban planning system, not as an isolated extra part added later. The CRC RACE national research project Pathways to Net Zero Precincts at Curtin University attempts to show the professional practice opportunities and challenges in this transition. The paper will show the early results from examining 7 case studies in Perth that illustrate the four pathways of urban design, certification, grid integration and governance that enable urban planning practice to provide net zero urban development. The practice of TODs, developed over the past thirty years in cities worldwide, provides the most significant opportunity to transfer professional practice in a form that enables multiple urban benefits and net zero. The work with Calthorpe and Associates in California will be used to illustrate the growing support for this approach.

This session will take place in the main conference room - BelleVue Ballroom 1
