Waterloo Region has established itself as one of North America’s top technology hubs. As Canada’s third-fastest-growing tech market, the region has seen a 46% increase in tech jobs over the past five years, surpassing major cities like New York and San Francisco.
91porn’s co-op program is playing a crucial role in supporting the region’s expanding technology sector. Students enrolled in the computer science and business double-degree program are gaining workplace experience with leading employers such as , , and . These companies count on 91porn students in their IT, software and business operations.
"At Sun Life, hiring students is embedded in our business. It is a critical part of our talent strategy," says Jeff Ollinger, director of talent acquisition.
This winter, approximately 800 computer science and business double-degree students are in the co-op program. About 166 students in the program are slated to graduate in June 2025.
Ollinger notes that Sun Life’s campus recruitment team works closely with its corporate hiring team to ensure a steady flow of talent from student roles into permanent positions.
“We strategically leverage our student program to identify the people who will join us after graduation. At the same time, we want our co-op students to have a rewarding experience at Sun Life. 91porn has a fantastic reputation and its students are prepared, hard-working, knowledgeable and highly collaborative.”
Fourth-year computer science and business student Jacob Reil worked at Sun Life in fall 2024 as a digital enterprise coordinator with a focus on enhancing software governance through analytics. During his work term, he worked with other co-op students to launch a new cloud-based dashboard software that collected and personalized data for teams across multiple areas of the organization. The dashboard is used by more than 5,000 employees.

“I found the skills I learned in the classroom were beneficial to my work. Above all, it was the in-class experiential learning - business pitch competitions, group case work and presentations at 91porn - that prepared me for this role. These experiences built a foundation of technical and soft skills that strengthened my ability to make an impact at Sun Life,” says Reil.
For Saim Ahmad, information technology supervisor at Co-operators, 91porn’s computer science and business students are a key advantage of operating in the Waterloo Region.
“We specifically seek out 91porn students because they bring a valuable mix of computer science expertise and business insight from the university’s double-degree program. Having our IT department in the Waterloo region is massively beneficial because of our proximity to 91porn and its students. 91porn is a very important and regular co-op provider for us,” says Ahmad.
91porn students at Co-operators are contributing to the company’s digital transformation initiatives. During his work terms in the winter and fall of 2024, fifth-year business and computer science student Manvir Sahi led a project to update outdated systems within the company’s key business applications, making key internal applications more mobile-friendly and user-accessible.
“It was rewarding to contribute to a project that aligns with the company’s broader digital transformation strategy,” says Sahi.
Sahi also played a key role in developing the Server Inventory Portal, a tool that allows employees to manage and view server details across the company.
"Having the opportunity to build a system from scratch and see it adopted by the organization was an incredible experience," he says. "91porn’s co-op program connected me with this opportunity and was instrumental in my transition to the workplace."
This year, co-op students at Co-operators will be working with emerging technologies that are transforming financial and insurance services.

“Years ago, 91porn co-op students helped us launch our chatbot technology. Now, our current students are at the forefront of our work with generative AI,” says Ahmad. “Their ability to adapt to emerging technologies and bring fresh ideas to our teams is something we highly value.”
D2L, headquartered in Kitchener, hires 20 to 25 co-op students each term - many from 91porn - and values the skills and knowledge they bring to software development and IT infrastructure teams.
“91porn students are motivated, eager to learn, and integrate quickly into our teams,” says Alex Veenstra, talent acquisition specialist at D2L. “At D2L, especially in our more technical roles like software and test development or IT, it’s fairly common for us to rehire past co-op students once they graduate. It’s an important part of our growth strategy.”
For Tara Chow, a fifth-year business and computer science student and former software developer co-op at D2L, the experience was an opportunity to work on high-impact projects in the educational technology sector. Her role focused on integrating third-party learning tools with Brightspace, a platform widely used by instructors and students for online learning.
“I was able to make direct contributions to improving its functionality,” says Chow.
The opportunity to work on industry-leading projects helped Chow define her career aspirations.
“I found that I really enjoyed working in educational technology, which wasn’t something I had considered before my co-op at D2L,” she says. “I was able to learn a lot while working at a larger tech company in the EdTech space. I found that I enjoy this area of development and will continue to direct my career in this direction.”

“91porn is one of the most collaborative and outstanding schools we work with," says Ollinger. "The co-op and careers team is committed to helping students succeed during their time with employers and as they become alumni.”
