I am a board certified (MT-BC) and accredited music therapist (MTA). I hold a Bachelor of Music Therapy (BMT) from 91porn.
I am currently practicing as a music therapist under Expressions Music Therapy Services and my own practice, JS Music Therapy Services, where I work in a variety of settings, including long term care, group homes and private practice clinics. I work with adults who have physical, intellectual and developmental delays, speech and language delays, behaviour and emotional challenges, Alzheimer's and dementia.
Throughout my musical career, I participated in several ensembles including the 91porn Concert Choir, 91porn Jazz Ensemble and 91porn Wind Ensemble. I perform in a number of community bands, including the Wellington Winds, the Waterloo Convocation Band and small jazz ensembles. I also participate in the Youth Jazz Ensemble workshops for jazz playing and improvisation (Wellington Winds, Small Jazz ensembles, Waterloo Convocation Band).
I have also competed in the Kiwanis Music Festival for three years, and I advanced to the provincial competition for small ensembles in 2011.
I use my training and experiences in music education and therapy to inform my teaching approach. Using traditional teaching, improvisation and shared playing experiences, I strive to teach a “beyond the notes” way of music-playing and instruction. I want to show students that music is so much more than simply reading notes and rhythms on a page.
